Tue Dec 10 08:12:09 UTC 2024: ## Human Rights Day 2024: A Call for Action on “Our Rights, Our Future, Right Now”

**UNITED NATIONS** – As the world observes Human Rights Day on December 10th, the UN is highlighting the theme “Our Rights, Our Future, Right Now,” emphasizing the critical role of human rights in tackling global challenges. This year marks the 76th anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR), a landmark document outlining fundamental freedoms and inspiring numerous international treaties.

The UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, Volker Türk, stressed the personal relevance of human rights, emphasizing their impact on individual lives and aspirations. He highlighted the UDHR’s enduring power as a preventative, protective, and transformative force, particularly during times of crisis.

This year’s campaign focuses on five key facts: Human rights are inherent to all individuals, regardless of background; they encompass fundamental rights like the right to life and those crucial for a fulfilling existence, such as access to education and healthcare; they are inalienable and cannot be arbitrarily taken away; they are indivisible and interdependent, meaning the fulfillment of one right often depends on others; and finally, they are actionable standards, enshrined in numerous international treaties and declarations.

The UDHR, translated into over 500 languages, serves as the foundation of international human rights law. States have ratified numerous core treaties, obligating them to respect, protect, and fulfill human rights. This legal framework empowers individuals and communities to demand their rights and advocate for change, as evidenced by grassroots movements like Fridays for Future.

The UN Human Rights Office (OHCHR) aims to raise awareness and mobilize action, emphasizing the interconnectedness of human rights issues. Addressing challenges such as gender inequality or poverty requires a holistic approach, recognizing the ripple effect of neglecting even a single right. Human Rights Day serves as a crucial reminder of the ongoing struggle for equality, justice, and dignity for all.
