Mon Dec 09 20:32:44 UTC 2024: ## India Seeks to Repair Ties with Bangladesh Amidst Tensions

**DHAKA** – Indian Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri visited Dhaka on Monday for high-level talks aimed at addressing strained relations between India and Bangladesh. The visit, Misri’s first since the recent political upheaval in Bangladesh, comes amid concerns over the safety of religious minorities following a series of attacks on Hindu temples and individuals.

Misri met with Bangladesh’s Foreign Affairs Adviser Touhid Hossain and Foreign Secretary Mohammad Jashim Uddin, expressing India’s deep concern over the violence and the reported targeting of religious and cultural sites. He described the discussions as “frank, candid, and constructive.” The meetings included a frank discussion of the recent political changes in Bangladesh, including the ousting of former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and the subsequent ascension of Nobel Peace laureate Mohammad Yunus. Hasina’s flight to India further complicated the already tense situation.

While India and Bangladesh have historically enjoyed close ties, recent months have seen a deterioration in relations marked by rising communal tensions and violence against minority groups. The lack of a bilateral meeting between Prime Ministers Narendra Modi and Mohammad Yunus at the recent UN General Assembly highlighted the growing rift.

Misri’s visit is viewed as a crucial step in attempting to de-escalate tensions and reassure Bangladesh’s minority communities of India’s continued commitment to their well-being. He is also scheduled to meet with Prime Minister Yunus. The outcome of these high-level discussions will be closely watched as both nations navigate a complex and sensitive political landscape.
