**CHENNAI, INDIA – December 5, 2024** – A new platform, MetaROR (MetaResearch Open Review), is seeking to address the long-standing problems plaguing the academic peer-review system. The current system, while intended to ensure quality research, is often criticized for being slow, inefficient, and prone to bias. Reviewers, whose contributions are crucial, frequently work anonymously and without recognition.
MetaROR, a collaboration between the Association for Interdisciplinary Meta-Research and Open Science and the Research on Research Institute, employs a “publish, review, curate” model. This innovative approach reverses the traditional process by first publishing research online as a preprint, followed by open peer review. Reviews are made publicly available, acknowledging reviewers’ contributions and potentially mitigating issues arising from anonymous, negative reviews. The platform aims to foster a constructive dialogue between authors and reviewers, prioritizing improvement over gatekeeping.
The platform works by allowing authors to submit preprinted articles. MetaROR then recruits reviewers with relevant expertise, excluding those with conflicts of interest. Authors retain control over revisions following the review process and may subsequently submit their work to journals that accept MetaROR reviews.
While MetaROR is still experimental, its creators believe the open and transparent review process will accelerate scientific progress and reduce the frustrations commonly associated with traditional peer review. They hope the platform will serve as a model for other fields, ultimately improving the efficiency and quality of research evaluation.
