**San Diego, CA – December 6, 2024** – A new study published in *Science* reveals that the highly pathogenic H5N1 avian influenza virus may require only a single mutation to become easily transmissible between humans, sparking concerns of a potential pandemic. While there are currently no documented cases of human-to-human transmission, researchers at the Scripps Research Institute warn of the virus’s rapid adaptation.
H5N1, already lethal in 50% of human infections, typically requires multiple mutations to effectively infect humans. However, the Scripps study suggests this strain may evolve much faster than previously thought. The virus achieves this by changing its hemagglutinin protein, which allows it to bind to human cells more effectively. Though a single mutation doesn’t guarantee human-to-human transmission, the ease with which this adaptation could occur is alarming.
“The findings demonstrate how easily this virus could evolve to recognize human-type receptors,” said study first author Ting-Hui Lin. However, Lin emphasized that the study does not indicate that such an evolved, easily transmissible strain currently exists.
Lead researcher Ian Wilson noted the importance of monitoring the virus’s receptor specificity, as this is a crucial step towards transmissibility. While current human infections stem from close contact with infected birds, poultry, or other animals, the potential for a rapidly evolving, human-transmissible strain necessitates close monitoring of animal populations and vigilant public health measures. Public health officials are closely tracking the situation to prevent a potential global outbreak.
