Mon Dec 09 20:49:50 UTC 2024: ## Andhra Pradesh Officials Seize Thousands of Quintals of Illegally Transported Ration Rice

**Rayachoti/Kalakada, Andhra Pradesh:** A massive racket involving the illegal transportation of ration rice from Andhra Pradesh to neighboring states has been exposed, despite government claims of cracking down on such activities. Authorities in Anantapur district have seized over 8,291 quintals of ration rice in recent raids, arresting 336 individuals and filing cases against 150 more. The illegal movement of rice is reportedly facilitated by a mafia network allegedly linked to ruling party leaders, who are accused of using their influence to bypass checkpoints and transport the rice to neighboring states for sale.

While the state government publicly vows to prevent the illegal transportation of ration rice, reports indicate that the problem continues unabated. The rice is allegedly purchased from ration dealers with the help of local officials and powerful political figures. It’s then transported to nearby rice mills, repackaged, and shipped out, often with the complicity of police and other officials. The rice is sold at a significant profit, enriching the mafia and those involved in the scheme.

The raids conducted in Anantapur district, primarily focused on areas like Sambepalli and Kalakada, led to the recovery of large quantities of rice stashed in poultry farms and abandoned warehouses. However, despite these seizures and arrests, the illegal transportation is said to persist due to alleged political pressure and patronage. The officials involved in the raids are reportedly facing considerable pressure from within the ruling party to halt their investigations.

The scale of the operation is alarming, with estimates suggesting that over 60% of the free rice distributed to the public is diverted to the black market. The illegal activity is likened to the scale of red sandalwood smuggling, highlighting the significant resources and influence employed in the operation. The issue raises serious questions about the effectiveness of government oversight and enforcement in preventing such widespread corruption.
