Tue Dec 10 04:27:57 UTC 2024: ## Mumbai BEST Bus Crash Kills Seven, Injures Dozens

**Mumbai, India –** A BEST (Brihanmumbai Electric Supply and Transport) bus ran amok in Kurla, Mumbai on Monday night, resulting in the deaths of seven people and injuring 49 others. The incident occurred near Kurla West railway station in Ambedkar Nagar. The bus, en route from Kurla station to Andheri, collided with pedestrians, auto-rickshaws, and several cars.

The injured are receiving treatment at Sion and Kurla Bhabha hospitals. The driver, Sanjay More, who was on his first day on the job after joining as a contract driver on December 1st, has been arrested and charged with culpable homicide not amounting to murder. He reportedly told police he was confused by the bus’s automatic transmission.

Eyewitnesses described the bus swerving erratically before the collision. One witness, Zaid Ahmed, recounted seeing the bus speeding and weaving before the impact. He helped rescue passengers from an auto-rickshaw and transport them to the hospital.

The three-month-old bus, a 12-meter electric vehicle manufactured by Olectra and leased by BEST, is currently under investigation by the Regional Transport Office (RTO) to determine if any mechanical failures contributed to the accident. The RTO team will submit their findings to the police.

Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis announced a compensation of ₹5 lakh (approximately $6,000 USD) to the families of each victim. This tragedy follows a similar bus accident in Gondia, Maharashtra, ten days prior, which claimed 15 lives.
