**New Delhi, Dec 10, 2024** – President Draupadi Murmu will be the chief guest at a Human Rights Day event hosted by the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) in New Delhi today. The event, held at Vigyan Bhawan’s Plenary Hall, marks the annual commemoration of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR), adopted by the UN General Assembly in 1948.
Following the main event, a national conference will focus on “Mental Health: Coping with Stress from Classroom to Workplace.” The conference will address stress among children and adolescents, mental health challenges in higher education, and stress and fatigue in the workplace. The NHRC aims to explore the psychological impact of stress across life stages and propose recommendations to promote mental well-being in various sectors.
The Press Information Bureau of India released a statement detailing the NHRC’s activities over the past year. The commission reported handling over 66,000 cases, including 109 suo moto cases, and recommending nearly ₹17.24 crore in financial relief to victims of human rights violations. They have also deployed special rapporteurs to assess human rights conditions across the country, established core groups to address specific issues, and expanded their reach through the HRCnet portal, enabling online complaint filing and real-time tracking. The NHRC highlighted their interventions in various cases, including addressing workplace harassment, providing housing for the homeless, and assisting victims of communal violence and natural disasters. Over its three decades of operation, the NHRC has registered and resolved millions of cases.
