UDAIPUR, INDIA – Justice Ramchandra Singh Jhala, Chairman of the Rajasthan State Human Rights Commission, addressed a seminar at Bhupal Nobles University’s Law College on the eve of Human Rights Day, highlighting a critical issue: lack of public awareness about human rights.

Justice Jhala emphasized that while constitutional and human rights are identical, many remain unaware of their entitlements. He underscored the genesis of the Human Rights Commission, formed following widespread human rights abuses after World War II, and its crucial role in protecting these fundamental rights, which are inherent from birth. He detailed the Commission’s powers, including its ability to summon anyone in a case and its authority to take cognizance of news reports. He stressed the need for increased public awareness, particularly regarding workplace harassment against women, often overlooked due to a lack of information. He clarified that filing complaints with the Commission is free and can be done via mail. Even prisoners, he noted, are entitled to their rights.

The seminar also included discussions on integrating human rights education into school curricula and the importance of connecting human rights with environmental protection. Speakers highlighted the responsibility of society and administration in protecting women’s rights and emphasized that human rights form the cornerstone of a thriving society. The event was organized by Bhupal Nobles University Law College and included faculty, students, and administrative staff.
