Mon Dec 09 23:07:48 UTC 2024: ## Lack of Awareness Hampers Public Understanding of Human Rights: State Commission Chairman

**Bhopal, [Date]:** The chairman of the State Human Rights Commission, Ramchandra Singh Jhala, highlighted a critical gap in public awareness regarding human rights during a seminar at Bhopal Nobles University’s Law College on Monday. He emphasized that while the Constitution guarantees these rights, insufficient publicity and awareness prevent citizens from fully understanding their entitlements.

Jhala underscored the historical context of human rights, noting the widespread abuses following World War II that prompted international cooperation to protect them. He explained the Commission’s role in this effort, outlining its authority, similar to that of a civil court, including the power to summon individuals for questioning in relevant cases. He further briefed aspiring lawyers on the Commission’s operations.

Professor Shiv Singh Sarangdevot, presiding over the seminar, stressed the need to connect human rights with human compassion and environmental protection, arguing that environmental degradation threatens human civilization. He cited religious texts supporting the protection of human rights and noted the significance of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, adopted by the UN General Assembly on December 10, 1948. He advocated for incorporating the Commission’s authority into educational curricula to raise awareness among future generations.

Professor Mahendra Singh Rathore, secretary of Bhopal Nobles Institute, detailed the Commission’s structure and its vital role in protecting and promoting human rights at various levels. The seminar was attended by several faculty members and dignitaries from the university.
