**Mumbai, India** – Sanjay Malhotra has been appointed as the new Governor of the Reserve Bank of India (RBI), succeeding Shaktikanta Das whose term ended on December 10th. Malhotra, a 1990 batch IAS officer from the Rajasthan cadre, will assume his duties in Mumbai on December 11th.

Prior to this appointment, Malhotra served as the Revenue Secretary for the Government of India. He holds a computer science engineering degree from the prestigious Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Kharagpur and a master’s degree in public policy from Princeton University. His career spans over 30 years in the civil services, including roles in various departments such as power, finance and taxation, information technology, and mining. He also served as Secretary in the Department of Economic Affairs under the Ministry of Finance, and led the public-run REC Ltd (formerly Rural Electrification Corporation Limited).

Malhotra’s appointment comes after much speculation regarding a possible extension for Shaktikanta Das, who served two consecutive terms since 2018. Das addressed the 52nd Monetary Policy Committee meeting just days before the announcement of his successor.
