**Pune, India –** The Appointments Committee of the Cabinet has announced the appointment of Sanjay Malhotra, currently the Revenue Secretary, as the new Governor of the Reserve Bank of India (RBI). Malhotra will assume office on December 11th, 2024, succeeding Shaktikanta Das whose term concludes on December 10th. His appointment is for a three-year term.

Malhotra, a 1990-batch IAS officer of the Rajasthan cadre, brings extensive experience in finance and taxation at both state and central government levels. His career spanning over 30 years includes work in energy, finance, taxation, IT, and mining sectors. Before his current role, he served as the chairman of REC and additional secretary in the Ministry of Power. He holds an engineering degree in Computer Science from IIT Kanpur and a master’s degree in Public Policy from Princeton University.

Das, who completed two terms as RBI Governor, will have served a total of 6 years. Malhotra’s appointment marks a significant shift in leadership at the central bank.
