**New Delhi, India** – The Indian government announced the appointment of Sanjay Malhotra as the next Governor of the Reserve Bank of India (RBI), effective December 11th. Malhotra, currently the Revenue Secretary in the Ministry of Finance, will succeed Shaktikanta Das whose term concludes on December 10th. The appointment was confirmed via a notification from the Cabinet Appointments Committee on Monday.

Malhotra, a 1990 batch Rajasthan cadre IAS officer, brings extensive experience in finance and taxation at both state and central government levels. His career spans over 33 years, encompassing roles in diverse sectors including power, finance, taxation, information technology, and mines. The 56-year-old holds a computer science engineering degree from IIT Kanpur and a Master’s in Public Policy from Princeton University. His current role involves significant contributions to the formulation of direct and indirect tax policies.

Das, who assumed the governorship in December 2018, received a term extension after his initial three-year term. His tenure was marked by navigating the market fallout following the abrupt resignation of his predecessor, Urjit Patel.
