Mon Dec 09 07:10:26 UTC 2024: ## Marina Abramovic’s Zurich Retrospective: From Body-Pushing Performance to Digital Detox

**ZURICH, December 9, 2024** – Renowned Serbian performance artist Marina Abramovic is presenting a comprehensive retrospective of her 55-year career at the Kunsthaus Zurich, offering a stark contrast between her provocative past and a new focus on digital disengagement.

The exhibition, running until February 26th, features videos of Abramovic’s earlier works, including performances pushing her body to the extreme, such as self-flagellation and enduring audience-inflicted pain. One infamous piece, “Rhythm 0” (1974), recreated in the exhibition, saw the artist allow the audience to use 72 objects—ranging from a rose to a loaded pistol—on her for six hours, resulting in near-fatal abuse. The museum warns visitors that the retrospective contains disturbing content.

However, the exhibition also showcases Abramovic’s new installation, “Decompression Chamber,” a response to today’s digital overload. Here, visitors are invited to shed their phones and other technology, don noise-canceling headphones, and simply relax, encouraging a reconnection with their inner selves. Abramovic noted the irony of younger audiences photographing exhibits before experiencing them, emphasizing the importance of deeper engagement with art.

Curator Mirjam Varadinis highlighted the powerful emotional impact of the retrospective, noting visitors’ varied reactions, from distress to profound transformation. The exhibition, the first of its kind in Switzerland, spans Abramovic’s entire career, offering a complex and compelling look at the artist’s journey and her reflections on the contemporary world.
