**Mumbai, India** – India’s burgeoning aviation sector is experiencing a phenomenal surge, fueled by massive aircraft orders from its leading airlines. The latest deal, announced Monday, sees Air India adding another 100 Airbus planes to its already substantial order book, bringing its total 2023 Airbus order to 350 aircraft and its total aircraft orders since 2023 to 570.
This latest order, comprising 10 wide-body A350s and 90 narrow-body A320 family aircraft, follows a massive 470-aircraft order placed last year with both Airbus and Boeing. Combined, Air India’s orders represent a significant investment, pushing the total value of aircraft orders for India’s top three airlines—Air India, IndiGo, and Akasa Air—to well over $100 billion.
IndiGo has ordered 1,260 aircraft since 2011, while Akasa Air has placed orders for 226 since 2021. While exact pricing remains undisclosed, industry analysts suggest that the sheer scale of these orders results in substantial discounts from manufacturers Airbus and Boeing.
Tata Group, which owns Air India, aims to transform the airline into a global player. Tata Sons Chairman Natarajan Chandrasekaran stated that the additional aircraft are crucial for Air India’s expansion plans and its mission to become a world-class airline connecting India to global destinations. Airbus CEO Guillaume Faury expressed his delight at Air India’s continued investment in Airbus aircraft, highlighting the impressive growth of the Indian aviation market. The expansion reflects a larger trend of ambitious growth in the Indian aviation sector, driven by a rapidly expanding passenger base.
