The BJP’s accusations, leveled in the Lok Sabha on December 9th, allege that Rahul Gandhi is a “high-profile traitor” working with “international forces” like Soros to undermine India. The party claims Congress is furthering Soros’s agenda against India.
This isn’t the first time Soros’s actions have drawn international scrutiny. The Hungarian-born financier, who amassed his wealth through his hedge fund, Soros Fund Management, has been both lauded for his philanthropic work through the Open Society Foundations (OSF) and criticized for his financial maneuvers, including his infamous 1992 bet against the British pound.
Soros, a Holocaust survivor, has donated over $32 billion to promote democracy, free speech, and human rights globally. However, critics accuse him of using his wealth to shape political narratives and undermine sovereign governments under the guise of philanthropy.

The BJP further alleges that the OSF funds NGOs and activists in India opposing government policies, including protests against the CAA and 2020 farm laws. Indian authorities have investigated organizations linked to the OSF, accusing them of anti-national activities. While unsubstantiated, claims also persist that Soros indirectly supports separatist movements, including those advocating for Khalistan.
In response to alleged foreign interference, the Indian government has tightened regulations under the Foreign Contribution Regulation Act (FCRA), revoking licenses of several NGOs accused of foreign funding misuse. While Soros isn’t directly named in these actions, his OSF’s prominence fuels speculation about his involvement.
