Mon Dec 09 12:10:00 UTC 2024: ## Syrian Engineer Appointed to Lead Transitional Government
**DAMASCUS** – Following a series of high-level meetings, Syrian engineer Mohammad Al-Bashir, former head of the Salvation Government in Idlib, has been tasked with forming a new transitional government. The announcement comes after negotiations between Ahmed Al-Shar’a, a leader in the armed opposition’s operations, Al-Bashir, and former regime Prime Minister Mohammad Al-Jalali, who has been managing government affairs in the interim.
Al-Bashir, a 1983 Idlib native, holds degrees in electrical and electronic engineering from Aleppo University (2007) and Sharia and Law from Idlib University (2021). He previously served as Director of Associations Affairs and Minister of Development and Humanitarian Affairs in the Idlib-based Salvation Government in 2022.
The appointment aims to facilitate a peaceful transfer of power and prevent the country from descending into chaos following the fall of the Assad regime. Intense discussions are underway between the opposition’s political affairs administration and foreign diplomatic missions to address the evolving security and political landscape.
Meanwhile, Damascus’ political affairs administration has pledged to create a safe environment for returning Syrian refugees, urging those who fled the country to return and participate in rebuilding the nation. They have declared a new era focused on construction, development, and addressing past grievances through transparent mechanisms aimed at achieving lasting peace. The administration also aims to foster constructive regional and international relations, building a state based on the rule of law, justice, and fulfilling the aspirations of the Syrian people. A comprehensive national reconciliation process based on justice and equality is also a key component of their plan.
