**Doha, Qatar –** The recent gains by Syrian opposition forces against the Assad regime will significantly impact Lebanon, according to US envoy Amos Hochstein. Speaking at the Doha Forum, Hochstein stated that the weakening Syrian government will severely hamper Iran’s ability to supply weapons to Hezbollah, the Lebanese armed group.
Hochstein highlighted the timing of the Syrian rebel offensive, launched just a day after a US-brokered ceasefire between Israel and Hezbollah took effect. The offensive has resulted in substantial territorial losses for the Syrian government, creating a major obstacle for Iranian arms transfers. He emphasized that Iran is already reducing its presence in Syria.
The ceasefire, while successful in its initial goals, included provisions to control the flow of weaponry from Syria, with border security identified as crucial to its longevity. Hochstein acknowledged that Hezbollah has been significantly weakened by recent Israeli attacks, questioning its continued ability to support Assad and fight Israel simultaneously. He further noted that Lebanon has recognized Hezbollah’s diminished capabilities.
Despite the largely successful ceasefire, Hochstein admitted to violations from both sides, including Israeli attacks that resulted in Lebanese civilian casualties. He stressed that Hezbollah’s adherence to the agreement—specifically removing weapons from southern Lebanon—is vital for maintaining peace. Hochstein expressed hope that a strengthened monitoring mechanism will reduce future incidents. Israel’s complete withdrawal from Lebanon was cited as a positive sign for the ceasefire’s continued success.
