Sun Dec 08 02:35:03 UTC 2024: ## South Korean Ex-Defense Minister Detained Over Martial Law Declaration
**Seoul, South Korea** – Former South Korean Defense Minister Kim Yong-hyun was detained on Sunday, December 8th, 2024, becoming the first arrest in the ongoing investigation into last week’s controversial declaration of martial law by President Yoon Suk Yeol. Prosecutors launched a 62-member special investigation team to probe the matter, vowing a thorough investigation.
Mr. Kim, who resigned on Thursday, is accused of recommending the brief but shocking imposition of martial law to President Yoon. South Korean media reports indicate he voluntarily appeared at a Seoul prosecutor’s office, where his phone was confiscated before his detention. His former office and residence were also searched.
The declaration, which saw special forces surround the National Assembly building and army helicopters overhead, was swiftly overturned after parliament unanimously voted to reject President Yoon’s decree. The military withdrew before daybreak Wednesday.
The Opposition Democratic Party, which had attempted to impeach President Yoon a day earlier, but failed due to a ruling party boycott, plans to submit a new impeachment motion. They have accused President Yoon and Mr. Kim of “unconstitutional, illegal rebellion or a coup.” Multiple complaints against several individuals, including President Yoon and Mr. Kim, have been filed with police.
Mr. Kim himself accepted full responsibility for the actions of troops deployed during the martial law period. Three top military commanders have also been suspended pending investigation into their alleged involvement.
President Yoon apologized on Saturday for the declaration of martial law, stating he would accept legal and political responsibility but would leave the handling of the ensuing political turmoil to his party. Despite an apology, a recent survey indicated that a majority of South Koreans support his impeachment. The ruling People Power Party leader, Han Dong-hun, suggested exploring a controlled exit for the president, a proposal met with criticism from the Opposition. The declaration of martial law, the first in over 40 years, has caused alarm among key allies such as the U.S. and Japan. The political instability continues to deepen.
