Sun Dec 08 16:30:00 UTC 2024: **Football Legend Bill Belichick Considers UNC Coaching Job**

CHAPEL HILL, NC – Six-time Super Bowl champion Bill Belichick is a leading candidate for the University of North Carolina’s vacant head football coach position, sources confirmed to ESPN Thursday. The 72-year-old coach, who recently concluded a 24-year tenure with the New England Patriots, has reportedly held discussions with the university.

While Belichick has spent his career in the NFL, sources say he’s eager to return to coaching and is open to opportunities at both the college and professional levels. This follows the dismissal of Mack Brown on November 26th after a 6-6 season.

Belichick’s name is the biggest to emerge in the search, with sources indicating mutual interest. However, UNC is also reportedly considering other candidates, including Tulane’s Jon Sumrall and Iowa State’s Matt Campbell, among others. Pittsburgh Steelers offensive coordinator Arthur Smith, a UNC alumnus, declined the position.

Freddie Kitchens, UNC’s interim head coach, will lead the team in its upcoming bowl game. Belichick, whose father was a coach at the U.S. Naval Academy, has made several media appearances during his time away from coaching. His 333 career NFL wins rank second all-time. The decision on UNC’s next head coach is expected soon.
