**NAGAPATTINAM, December 8, 2024** – Residents of Nagapattinam are demanding immediate repair of non-functional streetlights along a two-kilometer stretch of New Beach Road, citing safety concerns. The lights, out for over 20 days, have plunged the area from the railway gate to the beach into darkness, impacting pedestrians and visitors.
N.P. Bhaskaran, President of the Nagapattinam District Development Council, expressed alarm over the situation, highlighting the area’s popularity with families and children. The lack of lighting, he stated, has created a significant safety hazard, particularly during evening hours. A petition has been submitted to the Nagapattinam Municipality and the Collectorate addressing the issue.
Local resident R. Prabha added that the nearby children’s park is also affected, with reduced attendance due to the lack of lighting increasing vulnerability to anti-social activities.
Municipal officials have promised to investigate and restore the streetlights as soon as possible.
