**Kozhikode, Kerala, December 8, 2024** – Residents of Elathur, a suburb of Kozhikode, staged a protest march on Sunday demanding the closure of a nearby Hindustan Petroleum Corporation Ltd. (HPCL) depot. The protest follows a recent incident where thousands of liters of diesel leaked into an open drain, raising serious concerns about public safety.
Protesters cited the depot’s proximity to a densely populated area as a major hazard. Officials from the Petroleum and Explosive Safety Organisation (PESO) are scheduled to continue their inspection of the depot on Monday, following a preliminary inspection on Saturday. Senior HPCL officials were present during the Saturday inspection. The PESO investigation will likely determine if the depot meets safety standards and whether further action is required.
