**Doha, Qatar** – Indian External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar has firmly denied any plans to create a new currency to rival the US dollar, dismissing recent warnings from US President-elect Donald Trump. Speaking at the Doha Forum in Qatar, Jaishankar stated that India has “never been for de-dollarization” and that currently, there is no proposal for a BRICS currency.
Trump, in a recent social media post, had threatened BRICS nations (Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa) with 100% tariffs if they pursued a de-dollarization policy or supported a currency to replace the US dollar. He warned that any country attempting to do so would “wave goodbye to America.”
Jaishankar acknowledged past trade-related tensions with the Trump administration but highlighted the strong personal relationship between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and President-elect Trump, which he believes has fostered strong bilateral ties. He emphasized India’s commitment to its largest trading partner, the United States, and reiterated that India has no intention of weakening the dollar.
While the BRICS nations do discuss financial transactions, Jaishankar’s statement clearly refutes Trump’s assertions of an impending anti-dollar initiative. The denial comes as a direct response to Trump’s aggressive stance against any attempt to diminish the US dollar’s global dominance.
