**Bengaluru, December 7, 2024** – Karnataka Revenue Minister Krishna Byre Gowda issued a stark warning against the dangers of misinformation, citing instances of violence and lynchings fueled by fake news. Speaking at the “Journalism @ Digital Crossroads” conclave at St. Joseph’s University, he emphasized the urgent need to address the issue while safeguarding freedom of speech in an increasingly complex media environment.
The conclave, co-organized by the Editors’ Guild of India (EGI), drew over 1,500 students from 15 Karnataka institutions, along with leading academics and industry experts. Discussions focused on the evolving media landscape and the challenges posed by the spread of misinformation.
National Law School of India University Vice-Chancellor Sudhir Krishnaswamy highlighted the state government’s Information Disorder Tackling Unit (IDTU), but cautioned against over-reliance on legal measures to combat fake news. He stressed the need for a multi-faceted approach.
Journalist and author Aakar Patel offered insights into the financial realities of the Indian media ecosystem over the past decade, noting shrinking media spaces and urging students to uphold journalistic ethics. The event underscored the critical role of responsible journalism in navigating the challenges of a “post-truth” era.
