**Los Angeles, CA** – Sony Pictures’ “Kraven the Hunter,” arriving in theaters this week, is facing an uphill battle at the box office. Early projections suggest a disappointing opening weekend gross of between $16 million and $24 million, putting it in a neck-and-neck race with the animated “The Lord of the Rings: The War of the Rohirrim,” which is also predicted to earn between $15 million and $24 million.
This close competition, however, paints a concerning picture for both films. Neither is expected to achieve the top spot, overshadowed by the continued success of “Wicked” and “Moana 2.” The limited theatrical release of “Kraven the Hunter” – only 3,000 locations compared to over 4,000 for the similarly unsuccessful “Morbius” and “Madame Web” – further dampens its prospects. Analysts suggest that the film, despite being positioned as an origin story, may not generate enough interest to warrant a sequel.
The underwhelming performance is also a blow to Sony’s plans for a larger Sinister Six cinematic universe, which has stalled after the lackluster reception of previous films featuring Spider-Man villains. Currently, Sony’s only confirmed Marvel projects are “Spider-Man 4” (a Marvel Studios production) and “Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse.” The fate of “Kraven the Hunter” serves as a stark reminder of the challenges faced by Sony in building a successful franchise outside of the main Marvel Studios productions.
