**MANAMA/VIENNA, December 7, 2024** – Iran is significantly accelerating its uranium enrichment to levels nearing weapons-grade, according to the head of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), Rafael Grossi. This alarming development, confirmed in a confidential IAEA report, shows Iran boosting enrichment to up to 60% purity, a process that could quickly yield enough material for multiple nuclear weapons.
Grossi revealed that Iran’s production capacity for 60%-enriched uranium is poised to increase seven to eightfold, potentially exceeding 34 kg per month at the Fordow plant alone. The IAEA report details Iran’s use of advanced centrifuges and a modified enrichment process to achieve this rapid increase.
Western nations have expressed deep concern, stating that such high levels of enrichment are unjustified for civilian purposes and that no other country has reached this level without producing nuclear weapons. Iran maintains it is not pursuing nuclear weapons. However, the IAEA estimates Iran already possesses enough 60%-enriched uranium for four nuclear weapons, should it choose to further enrich the material.
The IAEA report calls for urgent, enhanced safeguards and inspections at the Fordow plant to ensure no misuse of nuclear material. Recent diplomatic efforts between European and Iranian officials yielded little progress, with tensions further inflamed by a November resolution from Britain, Germany, France, and the United States criticizing Iran’s cooperation with the IAEA.
The acceleration of Iran’s enrichment program has been widely condemned. A German Foreign Ministry source called it a serious escalation, while Kelsey Davenport of the Arms Control Association termed it a dangerous and reckless act that jeopardizes future negotiations with the United States. Concerns are rising that the increased capacity to rapidly produce weapons-grade uranium could heighten the risk of miscalculation and military action.
Grossi noted that despite a previous agreement by Tehran to cap its stock of 60%-enriched uranium, no diplomatic process is currently underway to de-escalate the situation. The E3 (Britain, Germany, and France) aim to revive talks before the 2015 nuclear deal expires in October 2025, but the current trajectory raises significant doubts about the prospects for a peaceful resolution.
