**Virudhunagar, December 8, 2024** – The Virudhunagar District Collector, V.P. Jeyaseelan, has launched a comprehensive initiative to curb the rising school dropout rate in the district. In a letter addressed to heads of over 300 government and aided schools, Mr. Jeyaseelan urged the establishment of school-level committees tasked with bringing students back into the classroom before the upcoming half-yearly exams.
The Collector cited various factors contributing to students leaving school, including lack of interest in studies, family problems, single-parent household burdens, and the negative influence of technology and peer pressure. He stressed that with dedicated effort, the majority of these issues are addressable.
The proposed committees, comprising school heads and two volunteer teachers, will directly engage with dropout students and their families to understand and resolve individual challenges. The Collector emphasized the crucial role teachers play in guiding at-risk students away from potentially harmful influences and toward a positive future.
The district administration pledges full support to the schools through the District Educational Trust, offering assistance with healthcare (via Primary Health Centres), other essential needs, and a dedicated WhatsApp group for direct communication with the Collector’s office. Mr. Jeyaseelan highlighted the initiative as not merely an academic concern, but a crucial step toward building a better society. The success of this campaign hinges on the commitment of school heads and teachers to ensure the re-enrollment of all dropout students before the commencement of the half-yearly examinations.
