**Chennai, December 8, 2024** – The Greater Chennai Corporation (GCC) is stepping up efforts to improve water management and mitigate monsoon-related flooding across the city. In a major initiative on Saturday, the civic body undertook several crucial tasks to enhance rainwater retention and groundwater recharge. These included removing water hyacinth from 25,000 square meters of the Rettaikeni lake in Sholinganallur, desilting the 1.5-acre Aavin pond in Lambert Nagar, and clearing plastic waste from the Balaji Nagar Canal. The GCC also stated that strengthening bunds and preventing blockages are ongoing parts of their broader water management strategy, as announced on their social media channels. These actions aim to better prepare Chennai for the upcoming monsoon season.
