**Abu Dhabi, UAE** – Despite Charles Leclerc securing the fastest time in Friday’s first practice session for the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix, a 10-place grid penalty casts a shadow over Ferrari’s chances at the Constructors’ Championship. Leclerc’s impressive lap of 1:24.321, ahead of Lando Norris and Lewis Hamilton, was overshadowed by a new battery requiring the penalty.
The penalty is a significant blow to Ferrari’s hopes of overtaking McLaren for second place in the championship standings. Currently, McLaren leads Ferrari by 21 points, meaning even a Ferrari 1-2 finish in Sunday’s race won’t guarantee them the title if the two McLarens finish third and fourth. Red Bull, already secured the Constructors’ title for a third consecutive year.
“Unfortunately, today we’ve had a problem,” Leclerc commented, adding they would focus on a strong recovery. McLaren team principal Andrea Stella anticipates a strong challenge from Ferrari despite the penalty, stating, “Even with the penalty, I wouldn’t be surprised if we can see (Ferrari) very rapidly fighting for the front.”
The battle for second place is intense. Norris sits second in the drivers’ standings with 349 points, Leclerc third with 341, with their respective teammates, Piastri and Sainz, trailing. The Abu Dhabi Grand Prix promises a thrilling conclusion to the season.
