Sun Dec 08 06:08:59 UTC 2024: ## Sri Lankan Navy Detains Eight Indian Fishermen
**Rameswaram, December 8, 2024** – Eight Indian fishermen from Ramanathapuram district were arrested by the Sri Lankan Navy on Saturday night for allegedly crossing the International Maritime Boundary Line (IMBL) in the Palk Bay. Two trawlers belonging to the fishermen were also seized near Neduntheevu islet.
The fishermen, who had received permission to fish earlier that day, were apprehended while fishing near the islet. Authorities identified the detained boat owners as Karthik Raja and Sahaya Andrews. The arrested fishermen hailed from several coastal villages including Thangachimadam, Uchipuli, Rettaiyurani, and Agasthiyar Koodam. They were reportedly handed over to authorities at Kankesan Navy Port.
This incident follows a similar arrest on Wednesday, where 14 fishermen from Rameswaram were detained by the Sri Lankan Navy. Fishermen’s associations, already planning a strike until Sunday, are reportedly shocked by the latest arrests. The ongoing tension highlights the persistent conflict over fishing rights in the Palk Strait.
