Sun Dec 08 14:28:35 UTC 2024: ## Formula 1 Season Finale: McLaren Favored, but Ferrari Still in Contention for $140M Prize

**Abu Dhabi, UAE** – The Formula 1 season culminates this weekend in Abu Dhabi with a nail-biting constructors’ championship battle between McLaren and Ferrari. McLaren currently leads by 21 points, but with a maximum of 44 points available, Ferrari still has a mathematical chance of securing the $140 million (£106m) prize.

The race also marks emotional farewells for several drivers. Lewis Hamilton concludes his Mercedes career before his 2025 move to Ferrari, while Carlos Sainz’s time with Ferrari ends before his transition to Williams. Esteban Ocon unexpectedly raced his last event for Alpine in Qatar, replaced by Jack Doohan in Abu Dhabi. Other departures include Kevin Magnussen (Haas), Valtteri Bottas and Zhou Guanyu (Sauber), and, according to ESPN sources, Sergio Pérez (Red Bull).

ESPN’s Nate Saunders cautions McLaren against complacency, emphasizing the tight competition. While McLaren appears favored given their points lead and car suitability for the Yas Marina Circuit, the pressure could lead to mistakes. Ferrari’s potential for victory hinges on McLaren’s performance. The unpredictable nature of the final race leaves room for Red Bull and Mercedes to contend for a surprise win. However, Verstappen, coming off a record-breaking season, is predicted to capitalize on any tension to clinch his 10th victory of the year.

Adding to the intrigue, Formula 1 might expand to 12 teams with the acceptance of Cadillac in 2026. Meanwhile, FIA president Mohammed Ben Sulayem urged drivers to refrain from questioning the organization’s finances after recent driver inquiries.

The Yas Marina Circuit, celebrating its 15th year hosting F1, is set for a hot weekend (highs of 29°C, lows of 16°C) as it concludes another season of high-stakes racing. The race will air on ESPN1 and ESPN+ (US), Sky Sports F1 and BBC Radio 5 Live (UK). Follow ESPN’s F1 coverage for live updates from Nate Saunders and Laurence Edmondson.
