Sat Dec 07 02:09:21 UTC 2024: ## ZF Wins Prestigious Green Innovation Award for Magnet-Free Electric Motor

**Brussels, Belgium –** ZF, a global leader in mobility solutions, has been awarded the CLEPA Innovation Award in the “Green” category for its groundbreaking magnet-free electric motor. The award, presented by the European Automotive Suppliers Association (CLEPA), recognizes ZF’s innovative I²SM (In-Rotor Inductive-Excited Synchronous Machine) technology, which eliminates the need for rare earth materials typically found in electric motors.

ZF’s I²SM technology offers comparable performance to traditional electric motors while significantly boosting sustainability. By replacing rare earth magnets with an inductively excited system, the motor reduces reliance on environmentally damaging and geopolitically sensitive raw materials, improving supply chain resilience and energy efficiency. The absence of permanent magnets also eliminates drag losses, further enhancing efficiency.

Dr. Otmar Scharrer, Head of Engineering Electrified Powertrain Technology at ZF, stated that the award reflects the company’s dedication to developing environmentally friendly solutions for electromobility. This is not ZF’s first CLEPA Innovation Award; the company has previously been recognized for its autonomous shuttle, eTrailer, and Evasive Maneuver Assist system.

The CLEPA Innovation Awards, presented annually at a ceremony celebrating advancements in the automotive industry, received approximately 80 applications this year. ZF’s win underscores its ongoing commitment to sustainable and innovative technologies for the automotive and broader industrial sectors. The company employs 168,700 people globally and reported €46.6 billion in sales in 2023.
