Sat Dec 07 07:08:46 UTC 2024: ## Bangladesh’s Participation in India’s Vijay Diwas Uncertain Amidst Minority Atrocities
**Kolkata, December 7, 2024** – Uncertainty hangs over the participation of Bangladeshi Mukti Joddhas (freedom fighters) in India’s upcoming Vijay Diwas celebrations in Kolkata, following recent reports of atrocities against minorities in Bangladesh. The annual commemoration, marking India’s victory in the 1971 war that led to Bangladesh’s formation, is scheduled for December 16th.
While Major General Mohit Seth, speaking at a curtain-raiser event at Fort William, the headquarters of the Eastern Command, confirmed that Indian war veterans will participate in various events, he offered no clarity on the presence of a Bangladeshi delegation. Last year, a Bangladeshi delegation, including Mukti Joddhas, attended the celebrations.
General Seth highlighted the strong historical and cultural ties between India and Bangladesh, as well as the cordial relationship between their defense forces. He emphasized the Eastern Command’s central role in the 1971 war. However, the absence of confirmation regarding Bangladeshi participation this year fuels speculation about the impact of the recent events in Bangladesh on bilateral relations. Veteran war journalist Manash Ghosh also shared his experiences from the 1971 war at the event. The situation remains fluid as December 16th approaches.
