**Raichur, Karnataka, December 7, 2024** – A three-day Krishi Mela (Agriculture Fair) commenced Saturday at the University of Agriculture Sciences (UAS) in Raichur, aiming to address the growing challenges faced by Indian farmers. The fair, inaugurated by Shivakumar Swami of Kappatagudda Nandiveri Samsthan mutt, highlighted concerns over dwindling farmer interest in agriculture due to climate change and the detrimental effects of excessive chemical and fertilizer use.
Swami emphasized the need for a shift towards sustainable agricultural practices, advocating for increased use of dung and tree planting to improve soil health and create a more favorable climate. He noted the negative impact of chemical fertilizers on both the products and the soil itself.
UAS Vice-Chancellor M. Hanumanthappa stated that the mela aims to provide farmers with solutions to their daily problems, offering information on new inventions and pest control methods. He urged greater farmer participation to ensure the event’s success.
The event was attended by several dignitaries, including former MLA Basanagouda Byagwat and members of the UAS Managing Committee. The Krishi Mela is expected to continue until December 9th.
