**New Delhi** – West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee’s comments on the INDIA bloc’s leadership have ignited a firestorm of reactions from coalition partners. Banerjee, in a Friday interview, expressed frustration with the alliance’s coordination, stating that while she founded the bloc, its current leadership needs to improve. She suggested she could effectively lead the bloc from West Bengal, if given the opportunity, sparking speculation about a potential leadership change.
While Trinamool Congress (TMC) spokesperson Kunal Ghosh clarified that Banerjee doesn’t seek leadership for personal gain, emphasizing her focus on West Bengal, the remarks have triggered a range of responses from other INDIA bloc members.
CPI(M)’s D Raja expressed uncertainty about Banerjee’s intentions, highlighting the bloc’s common goal of defeating the BJP. The Congress, the largest party in the alliance, offered a cautious response, emphasizing the need for consensus among all members. Leaders like TS Singhdeo and Rashid Alvi stressed the importance of collective decision-making, a sentiment echoed by Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar. Congress MPs Tariq Anwar and Tanuj Punia underscored the need for discussions with Rahul Gandhi before any leadership decisions are made.
While some, like Samajwadi Party leader Udaiveer Singh, voiced support for Banerjee’s potential leadership, others, such as Ram Gopal Yadav, pointed to the Congress’s recent electoral performance as a factor contributing to the leadership discussions, while still advocating for the INDIA bloc’s continued existence.
The debate comes amidst questions about the bloc’s effectiveness, following mixed results in recent state elections. TMC’s recent bypoll victories in West Bengal have strengthened Banerjee’s position as a powerful anti-BJP figure, but internal divisions and coordination issues persist within the 20+ party alliance. The situation highlights the challenges facing the INDIA bloc as it aims to present a united front against the BJP in the upcoming general elections.
