GAZA CITY, PALESTINE – Israeli military strikes on Gaza have resulted in the deaths of at least 56 Palestinians, including hospital staff and patients, sparking international condemnation. The attacks, which occurred over the past day, targeted civilian homes and medical facilities, including the Kamal Adwan Hospital in Beit Lahiya and a home in Nuseirat refugee camp.
One particularly devastating air strike on a home in Nuseirat killed at least 26 people and wounded over 60, according to Al-Awda Hospital. A separate attack on Kamal Adwan Hospital, reportedly involving the use of drones and heavy artillery, left at least 30 dead, including four hospital staff members. Witnesses report that Israeli forces, after encircling the hospital, urged staff and patients to evacuate towards waiting tanks, before opening fire.
The attack on Kamal Adwan Hospital has been widely condemned as a war crime. The World Health Organization stated that the hospital was bombed without warning, violating international law. Dr. Eid Sabbah, director of nursing at the hospital, described the scene as chaotic, with individuals in various uniforms entering the hospital armed and using loudspeakers to direct the evacuation. Norwegian doctor Mads Gilbert alleges that Israeli forces are using hospitals as “traps,” attacking surrounding areas to lure civilians before targeting the medical facilities themselves.
The Palestinian Health Ministry has denounced the attacks, stating that the three main hospitals in northern Gaza are barely functional due to the ongoing Israeli offensive. The ministry, along with Hamas, accuses Israel of indiscriminate bombing and targeting of civilians. Israel, in turn, claims that Hamas fighters utilize civilian infrastructure, including hospitals and schools, for military operations. This claim is refuted by Hamas. The crisis unfolds amid the collapse of Gaza’s already strained health system.
