**Doha, Qatar –** External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar called for a more innovative and inclusive approach to global diplomacy during a panel discussion at the Doha Forum on December 7th, 2024. He emphasized the need for increased international cooperation to address global challenges exacerbated by ongoing conflicts, particularly the war in Ukraine.
Mr. Jaishankar highlighted the rising costs of oil, fertilizers, and shipping impacting numerous nations, including India, due to conflicts in the Gulf and Mediterranean regions. He argued that the traditional approach to conflict resolution, relying heavily on the UN Security Council or Western powers, is outdated, advocating for broader participation from all countries. He specifically stated that “more countries need to have the boldness to bypass the West.”
Regarding India’s role in the Russia-Ukraine conflict, Mr. Jaishankar stated that efforts are shifting towards negotiation rather than continued warfare. He detailed India’s active engagement with both Moscow and Kyiv, carrying messages between the two sides to seek common ground. He also underscored that India represents the interests of the Global South, many of whom are suffering economically due to the conflict. He noted that even some European leaders are now urging India to continue its engagement with Russia and Ukraine.
Mr. Jaishankar also addressed concerns about BRICS currency and potential anti-Western alliances. He clarified that India does not support de-dollarization and that there is currently no proposal for a BRICS currency. He further emphasized the complex and varied nature of international relations, stating that countries’ interests and alliances shift depending on the issue at hand.
The Doha Forum, described as a global platform for dialogue, hosted the panel discussion under the theme “The Innovation Imperative.” Mr. Jaishankar participated alongside the Qatari Prime Minister and Norway’s Foreign Minister Espen Barth Eide.
