Fri Dec 06 23:14:18 UTC 2024: ## Kosovo’s Former President Thaci Faces New Charges of Obstruction and Contempt

**The Hague, Netherlands –** Hashim Thaci, Kosovo’s former president and a key figure in the Kosovo Liberation Army (KLA), has been hit with new charges at the Kosovo Specialist Chambers (KSC) in The Hague. Prosecutors announced on Friday, December 6th, 2024, that Thaci, already on trial for war crimes, is now accused of obstructing justice and contempt of court.

The indictment alleges Thaci shared confidential information about prosecution witnesses with four associates – including former intelligence chief Bashkim Smakaj and former deputy prime minister Hajredin Kuci – instructing them to influence witness testimonies. All five individuals face charges related to these alleged attempts to interfere with the ongoing war crimes trial.

Thaci, who resigned from the presidency in 2020 to face the initial war crimes charges, has pleaded not guilty to all accusations. He is scheduled to appear in a public hearing regarding these new charges this Sunday.

The KSC, established in 2015 to prosecute alleged war crimes committed by former KLA members during and after the Kosovo War (1998-1999), has long been investigating Thaci. While hailed as a national hero by many in Kosovo, prosecutors allege Thaci oversaw acts of violence during the KLA’s struggle for control.

The Kosovo War, a brutal conflict that claimed approximately 13,000 lives, ended with a NATO intervention. Thaci, once praised by U.S. Vice President Joe Biden as the “George Washington of Kosovo,” now faces significant legal challenges, highlighting the complex legacy of Kosovo’s struggle for independence and its ongoing international tensions. The charges underscore the continued scrutiny surrounding the actions of KLA commanders and the lasting impact of the war.
