Fri Dec 06 17:37:54 UTC 2024: ## China Warns Taiwan Against US Reliance Amid President Lai’s Pacific Tour

**Beijing, December 6, 2024** – China issued a stern warning to Taiwan on Friday, asserting that seeking independence with the help of the United States is futile. The warning follows Taiwanese President Lai Ching-te’s recent Pacific tour, which included stops on U.S. soil and a phone call with U.S. House Speaker Mike Johnson.

China considers Taiwan a breakaway province and vehemently opposes any international recognition of the island’s sovereignty. Foreign Ministry spokesman Lin Jian stated that relying on the U.S. to contain China is a doomed strategy, adding that Beijing has lodged formal complaints with Washington urging them to uphold the “one-China” principle.

President Lai, during a press conference, expressed confidence in deepening cooperation with incoming U.S. President Donald Trump and called for greater unity among democracies to counter authoritarianism. He also reiterated that Taiwan and China are not subordinate to each other. Mr. Lin countered that Taiwan’s separatist activities are the greatest threat to peace and stability in the Taiwan Strait and that reunification with China is inevitable.

The ongoing tension highlights the increasingly fraught relationship between China and Taiwan, fueled by President Lai’s tour and the deepening ties between Taiwan and the United States.
