**MUZAFFARNAGAR, U.P., December 7, 2024** – Newly elected Rashtriya Lok Dal (RLD) MLA Mithlesh Pal and 14 others were formally charged on Friday with rioting and wrongful confinement in a Muzaffarnagar court. The charges relate to a 2019 incident where they allegedly blocked a road during a protest.

Special Judge Devendra Singh Fauzdar framed charges under sections 147, 148, and 342 of the Indian Penal Code (IPC). The protest, according to the prosecution, was staged near Mahavir Chowk to demand the inclusion of the Dhangar caste in the Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes list. The case was initially registered by Civil Lines police station on February 25, 2019.

Ms. Pal, who was recently elected MLA from the Meerapur Assembly constituency, appeared before the court along with the other accused. Her lawyer, Kiranpal, confirmed the charges and stated the next hearing is scheduled for January 3, 2025.
