**New Delhi, December 7, 2024** – Sixteen cases related to hoax bomb threats against flights operating from Delhi’s Indira Gandhi International Airport are slated for transfer to the National Investigation Agency (NIA), officials revealed Friday. The Delhi Police have requested the transfer, citing national security concerns and the international implications of the coordinated threats.
The cases, registered under the Suppression of Unlawful Acts against Safety of Civil Aviation Act, stem from a wave of over 510 bomb threats targeting domestic and international flights in late October. These threats, mostly disseminated via social media and VPNs, forced numerous flight diversions and caused significant operational and financial disruptions for airlines. One such incident involved an Akasa Air flight to Bengaluru, which was forced to return to Delhi after a threat on October 16th.
Investigations by the Delhi Police and the airport authorities have so far yielded no leads, hampered by the use of VPNs that masked the origin of the threatening messages. Some servers used to route the threats have been traced to European countries, including the UK and Germany. The NIA’s involvement is expected to provide the necessary resources for a more comprehensive investigation.
