Sat Dec 07 13:51:51 UTC 2024: ## Shivamogga MLA Protests Postponement of Ashraya Scheme Beneficiary Selection
**SHIVAMOGGA, December 7, 2024** – Shivamogga MLA S.N. Channabasappa led a protest on Saturday against the Shivamogga City Corporation’s decision to postpone a meeting to select beneficiaries for the Ashraya housing scheme. The meeting, scheduled to select 652 beneficiaries for houses in Govindapura Extension, was postponed by Corporation Commissioner Kavitya Yogappannavar, who cited the lack of power and water supply to the newly constructed houses as the reason for the delay.
Channabasappa, who heads the Ashraya Committee and was to chair the meeting, rejected the commissioner’s explanation. He and other BJP leaders accused the corporation officers of acting on the instructions of Congress Minister Madhu Bangarappa, who is in charge of the Shivamogga district. Channabasappa claimed his rights as committee head were denied and lodged a complaint with the Deputy Commissioner.
The postponement sparked a protest by both the MLA and the assembled beneficiaries, who had gathered at Kuvempu Ranga Mandira. Beneficiaries staged a sit-in in front of the commissioner’s vehicle, prompting police intervention before she could leave the venue. The incident highlights ongoing political tensions in Shivamogga surrounding the implementation of the Ashraya scheme.
