Sat Dec 07 13:29:40 UTC 2024: ## South Korean President Faces Impeachment Bid After Failed Emergency Decree
**Seoul:** South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol is facing an impeachment motion after his attempt to impose emergency rule to suppress the opposition was thwarted. The motion, filed by the main opposition Democratic Party and five smaller parties, is expected to be put to a vote in parliament on Friday.
President Yoon attempted to invoke emergency powers on Tuesday, claiming that opposition parties were collaborating with North Korea and promoting communist ideology. He deployed troops around the National Assembly. However, opposition lawmakers successfully breached security and voted down the emergency decree 190-0 within hours. The cabinet subsequently approved the rejection.
The impeachment requires a two-thirds majority in parliament and the support of at least six out of nine justices on the Constitutional Court. Several ministers in President Yoon’s government resigned amid fears of potential impeachment. President Yoon himself has remained silent. If impeached, Prime Minister Han Duck-soo would succeed him.
Following the failed emergency decree, life in South Korea has returned to normal. The incident has sparked widespread political turmoil and raised concerns about democratic norms in the country. The president’s party lacks a parliamentary majority, which contributed to the failure of his emergency decree.
