Fri Dec 06 03:14:15 UTC 2024: ## Visakhapatnam Doctor Successfully Removes Massive Kidney Stone Using Minimally Invasive Surgery

**VISAKHAPATNAM, December 6, 2024** – A 46-year-old man, M. Appalanaidu, has been successfully treated at KIMS ICON Hospital in Visakhapatnam for a massive staghorn kidney stone measuring 5×5 cm. The stone, which had reduced his kidney function to 30%, was causing him to pass blood in his urine for three months.

After seeking unsuccessful treatment at multiple hospitals, Appalanaidu consulted Dr. K. Abhiram, a consultant urologist at KIMS ICON Hospital. Dr. Abhiram employed a minimally invasive laparoscopic approach to remove the stone in a single surgical session, minimizing damage to the kidney.

Appalanaidu recovered remarkably well, being discharged just two days post-surgery. He is now reported to be in stable and improved condition.

Staghorn kidney stones, known for their size and potential complications, often require complex procedures for removal. While various techniques exist, including open surgery and PCNL, Dr. Abhiram highlighted the advantages of laparoscopic pyelolithotomy for its precision, quicker recovery time, and preservation of kidney function. The hospital’s statement emphasized the successful outcome as a testament to the effectiveness of this minimally invasive approach.
