Fri Dec 06 03:30:00 UTC 2024: ## Lakkundi’s Hidden History Unearthed: Village Donates 1,050 Relics for Heritage Site Bid

**Gadag, Karnataka, December 6, 2024** – The sleepy village of Lakkundi in Gadag district, Karnataka, is experiencing a historical resurgence. A three-day exploration initiated by the Karnataka State Tourism Department, in collaboration with the district administration and Archaeology Department, unearthed over 1,050 historical relics and 13 inscriptions, sparking hopes of UNESCO World Heritage Site status.

The initiative, part of a larger ₹447 crore plan to develop five iconic tourist centers across the state, saw an unprecedented outpouring of community support. Residents, celebrating with traditional dances and festive decorations, willingly donated artifacts – including a Stone Age weapon and 10th-century coins – from their homes and properties. Two brothers even donated 17 guntas of land containing an ancient mutt with inscriptions. While overjoyed to contribute to Lakkundi’s heritage, the brothers expressed uncertainty about compensation for their donation. Tourism Minister H.K. Patil assured that the government will address this, though specifics remain undecided.

Minister Patil emphasized the project’s aim to highlight Karnataka’s rich cultural heritage. He stated that excavation work will begin in December, focusing on both surface and underground artifacts, with the potential to uncover the remains of numerous buried temples and the ancient coin mint’s molds. The collected antiquities will be preserved and eventually housed in a dedicated Lakkundi museum, with plans to seek recognition in the World Book of Records. The funding for the full development of Lakkundi as a major tourism hub will be detailed in next year’s budget. The event signifies not only a rediscovery of Lakkundi’s past but also a testament to the community’s profound commitment to preserving its historical legacy.
