**Bengaluru, December 5, 2024** – Karnataka residents seeking to install solar rooftop photovoltaic (SRTPV) systems will now face a significantly streamlined process. The Karnataka Electricity Regulatory Commission (KERC) announced Thursday that the sanctioned electricity load for consumers installing SRTPV systems will be automatically increased up to 10 kilowatts (kW), eliminating the need for separate applications and inspections.
This move, prompted by a request from the Bangalore Electricity Supply Company (Bescom), aims to boost participation in the PM Surya Ghar scheme, which offers subsidies for solar installations. The decision also addresses concerns raised by system integrators about the mismatch between increasingly powerful solar modules and existing sanctioned loads. The KERC has permitted a 10% capacity tolerance for SRTPV installations up to 10 kW.
Previously, consumers wishing to install solar systems exceeding their sanctioned load had to apply for load enhancement, undergo inspections, and pay fees, a process that often caused delays. Now, consumers can install up to a 9 kW solar plant with automatic load enhancement, although they will still need to pay applicable charges, additional security deposits, and sign a power supply agreement.
Rajeev Kumar, a resident of Vidyaranyapura, welcomed the change, stating that reduced bureaucracy encourages greater adoption of renewable energy technologies. The simplified process is expected to significantly accelerate the adoption of rooftop solar systems in Karnataka.
