**New Delhi –** Delhi’s improved air quality has prompted the Commission for Air Quality Management (CAQM) to lift the stringent Stage 4 pollution curbs under the Graded Response Action Plan (GRAP) with immediate effect. The decision follows a Supreme Court order, acknowledging the recent improvement in air quality.
While the strictest restrictions are gone, Stage 2 of GRAP remains in effect. This means measures like mechanized road sweeping, anti-smog gun deployment, and daily water sprinkling will continue, particularly targeting pollution hotspots. Power suppliers must maintain consistent electricity supply to minimize reliance on diesel generators. Public awareness campaigns will continue via media outlets, informing citizens of air quality levels.
The Supreme Court emphasized the importance of maintaining the improved air quality, urging continued adherence to Stage 2 measures. Citizens are encouraged to use public transport, choose less congested routes, and regularly maintain vehicle air filters. The ban on coal and firewood, including tandoor use in restaurants and hotels, and the restriction on diesel generator use (except for emergencies) will remain. Construction and demolition sites and industrial units under closure orders will also remain shut.
Today’s Air Quality Index (AQI) reading of 165 indicates ‘moderate’ air quality, a significant improvement from recent weeks. The CAQM will continue monitoring the situation to prevent a return to ‘very poor’ or ‘severe’ air quality levels.
