**New York, NY** – The New York Police Department (NYPD) is utilizing facial recognition technology and evidence from a discarded mobile phone in its investigation into the murder of Brian Thompson, 50, CEO of UnitedHealth Group. Thompson was fatally shot Wednesday morning outside a Midtown Manhattan Hilton hotel.
The attack, which police believe was premeditated, occurred around 6:45 AM EST. Security footage shows a masked suspect, wearing a light brown or cream jacket, seemingly waiting for Thompson before shooting him in the back and leg. The suspect, whose weapon appeared to malfunction briefly, then fled on foot. Initial reports suggested the suspect used a Citi Bike, but Lyft, the bike-sharing company, has since denied this.
A crucial piece of evidence is a surveillance image from a nearby Starbucks showing the suspect moments before the shooting. While masked, police believe the image offers enough detail for facial recognition software to yield a match. Investigators are also analyzing three bullet casings and three live rounds recovered from the scene, which reportedly bore the words “deny,” “defend,” and “depose.” A mobile phone found along the suspect’s escape route is currently being analyzed.
While a motive remains unclear, police note the suspect left without taking any of Thompson’s belongings. Thompson’s wife revealed previous threats against her husband, though details are scarce. A prior, unsubstantiated incident at Thompson’s Minnesota home in 2018 is also under review. The NYPD’s Chief of Detectives, Joseph Kenny, confirmed that a suppressor was used on the firearm.
The investigation is ongoing, and the NYPD is urging anyone with information to come forward.
