Thu Dec 05 12:56:00 UTC 2024: ## Fadnavis Returns as Maharashtra Chief Minister in Surprise Twist

**Mumbai, India** – Devendra Fadnavis has been sworn in as the Chief Minister of Maharashtra, ending nearly two weeks of political maneuvering and speculation. The unexpected announcement follows a dramatic power struggle between the BJP and the Shiv Sena, culminating in a surprising alliance with a faction of the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP).

Fadnavis, a three-time Chief Minister, secured the top post despite the BJP’s partner, the Shinde faction of the Shiv Sena, initially claiming the position. Eknath Shinde and Ajit Pawar, leader of the breakaway NCP faction, were sworn in as Deputy Chief Ministers. This arrangement maintains the existing 1+2 formula but shifts power significantly in favor of Fadnavis.

The BJP’s victory is attributed to its success in destabilizing both the Shiv Sena and the NCP, drawing key figures into its alliance. The combined efforts flipped approximately 75 seats previously held by the Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) alliance, reducing its seats from a previous win to 49. The BJP secured 132 seats in the recent elections, the largest number for any single party.

Shinde’s faction of the Shiv Sena, claiming 57 seats, initially expected him to retain the Chief Minister’s position. However, the BJP’s strong showing, coupled with Ajit Pawar’s support, left Shinde with minimal leverage. Following days of negotiations and speculation, including a reported temporary retreat by Shinde, he ultimately accepted the Deputy Chief Minister’s position.

The BJP is reported to have secured approximately 20 cabinet berths, leaving around a dozen for Shinde’s faction of the Shiv Sena. High-profile portfolios, including the Home Ministry and possibly Water Resources and Public Works Department, are expected to be allocated to the Shinde Sena.

Fadnavis’s return fulfills a promise he made five years ago after being ousted from the Chief Minister’s position following the 2019 election. His comeback is seen as a remarkable political achievement.
