**Geneva, Switzerland** – The United Nations is launching a desperate plea for $47.4 billion in humanitarian aid for 2025, warning of a looming catastrophe driven by escalating conflicts and climate change. The appeal, the fourth largest in history, aims to assist a staggering 190 million people facing starvation and displacement across 32 countries.
OCHA chief Tom Fletcher described the situation as a “double whammy,” with conflicts in Ukraine, Sudan, and Gaza, coupled with extreme weather events, creating an “unprecedented level of suffering.” He acknowledged a shortfall in funding this year, with only 43% of the $50 billion appeal met, leading to drastic cuts in essential services like food aid in Syria and water sanitation in Yemen.
Fletcher emphasized the need for “ruthless prioritization” in allocating the requested funds, promising to focus on those in “most dire need.” However, he admitted the appeal still leaves 115 million people without assistance.
Concerns loom over potential US funding cuts under the incoming administration, with experts highlighting the significant role US aid plays in the global humanitarian effort. The high number of humanitarian worker deaths this year – a record 281 – further underscores the perilous conditions faced by aid providers.
Fletcher issued a stark warning, stating the global humanitarian system is “overstretched, underfunded, and under attack,” urging a “surge in global solidarity.” The coming year will require difficult choices, he added, as the UN grapples with a global crisis of unprecedented scale.
