**Amritsar, Punjab –** A brazen assassination attempt on Akali Dal chief Sukhbir Singh Badal was thwarted today at the Golden Temple in Amritsar. Multiple videos circulating on social media captured the moment a man, identified as Narain Singh, approached Badal and attempted to shoot him.
While offering “seva” (voluntary service) at the temple, Badal, dressed in a blue uniform, was standing guard with a spear when Singh approached. Quick-thinking security personnel, alerted to Singh’s actions, intervened just as he fired a shot. The bullet missed Badal and struck a nearby wall. Singh was immediately apprehended by security and devotees.
Amritsar Police Commissioner Gurpreet Singh Bhullar confirmed the arrest of Narain Singh, who has a criminal record and alleged links to the Khalistani terrorist group Babbar Khalsa. Bhullar praised the swift actions of officers Rishpal Singh, Jasbir, and Parminder Singh, who prevented a potentially catastrophic outcome. He acknowledged the challenges of maintaining security at the Golden Temple while respecting religious sensitivities.
Badal, former Deputy Chief Minister of Punjab, escaped unharmed. His wife, Bathinda MP Harsimrat Kaur Badal, arrived at the Golden Temple shortly after the incident.
Sources within the security establishment claim Singh is considered the mastermind behind the 2004 Burail jailbreak, in which four inmates, including Babbar Khalsa chief Jagtar Singh Hawara and assassins of former Chief Minister Beant Singh, escaped.
Police have registered a case and are investigating the incident thoroughly. Commissioner Bhullar appealed for peace and calm amongst the public.
